It’s only wafer thin.

If you love Monty Python, you’ll get the title of this blog post.

I’m reading this wafer thin book on creativity by British comedian, actor, screenwriter, producer (and more) John Cleese. It’s nice to hear from other creatives about their process, and to see what they’ve found important along the way. I want to share one little thing from the book that stuck out for me.

I remind my painting students and Without a Net friends that analytical thinking gets in the way of being in the flow of creativity. Mr. Cleese points out that during pro basketball games, when a fellow player is having a bad game, his teammates will call out, “Stop Thinking!” At Red Dot Gallery I tell my students, “No thinking at Red Dot.” I love to be reminded that the best wisdom applies in all endeavors.

If you know how “thinking” gets in the way in your field, let me know!
